Originally from the west coast of Scotland, he settled in the Yorkshire area after training in Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Following a comprehensive advanced surgical training programme, he completed his training at the leading international Hand Surgery Unit in the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, USA. He brought many new techniques for the care of the injured wrist and hand back to the UK at that time and has continued to lead developments in his specialty with his work with the AO Foundation, based in Switzerland.
Since 2005, Doug has been the Chairman of the AO Hand Expert Group – a group of 7 leading international hand surgeons – who design, evaluate and produce innovative new implants and solutions for the management of skeletal trauma. Being at the forefront of this initiative has brought great benefits to Doug’s patients.
He is a committed educator and was appointed Visiting Professor to both the Australian Orthopaedic Association and the Asia Pacific Federation of Hand Surgery Societies in 2008, the Singapore Hand Surgery Society in 2009 and the Chilean Hand Surgery Society in 2011. He has lectured internationally in over 20 different countries, has written chapters for 7 international surgery textbooks, and has published more than 30 peer reviewed articles.
Doug has become a leading and sought after opinion in the highly specialized area of sports and performance problems. This is a challenging aspect of his work and he is regularly consulted by sports doctors and physiotherapists across a breadth of elite sports including gymnastics, diving, rugby league, rugby union, football and cricket. He has a unique experience and special interest in managing golfers with hand or wrist problems and is a Member of the Specialist Advisory Board of the PGA European Tour, providing his services to the world’s top elite golfers at several tournaments each year.
